Countertop Material Choices

Kitchen and Bath remodeling usually means new countertops. There are a few things to consider when choosing materials and the choice will often vary between what you’d like in your kitchen vs. what you’d like in your bath.

Granite Countertops

Granite is a natural stone. It’s an igneous rock meaning that it was formed by volcanic activity or molten rock and cooled slowly over time.

Natural stone patterns are very unique and organic in nature. They vary widely in pattern and color and can vary from slab to slab. With natural granite stone comes durability. Granite is one of the most durable materials and resistant to heat and impact. It does require a bit of maintenance with an annual sealing process.

Granite is porous so not as resistant to staining and can be susceptible to acidic foods. Granite looks great and can make a beautiful selection for kitchen counters. It has a few draw backs on surfaces subject to more harsh uses such as showers and bath counters.

Quartz Countertops

Quartz is a manufacturer stone surface. Silestone and Ceasarstone are two of the more popular brands we incorporate into our kitchen and bath remodels. DalTile also makes a compatible quartz surface.

Quartz offers a ton of color and pattern options. Quartz is very durable and is non-porous so super easy to clean. In the kitchen, it is not as heat resistant as granite so you’d want to avoid placing hot pans directly on the surface. It is also almost as durable as quartz but can get scratches. So, a reasonable amount of care and protection should be used.

Quartz does not need any sealing or other maintenance. Just clean it regularly and since it’s non-porous, it’s resistant to bacteria.

Engineered Marbled Countertops

Engineered or cultured marble is a stone surface made up of crushed stone and resins. This is a popular and carefree material choice for wet areas. Shower enclosures, tubs, bathroom countertops, back splashes…areas that will get heavy use and often wet and where harsh chemicals in bathroom cleaners will be used.

The color and patterns are similar to quartz surfaces but at a more economical price point. Marble presents itself well: bright, clean and seam free (in most cases). Sinks can be molded into the counter surface or the traditional top or bottom mount sinks can be used.

Often, we see Marbled products used in the family bath while some quartz products are used in the master bath where less use and wear and tear is likely.
